Read what some of our students have to say about KLC...

I decided to take classes at the KLC to improve my reading and writing skills. I couldn*t believe how quickly my penmanship and reading abilities improved. After one term at KLC, I was at a writing level where I could email my father in Korean! In addition, knowing how to spell the words I had been speaking also heightened my speaking skills. I highly recommend this course to Korean-Americans who want to improve their Korean communication skills!

Before our wedding and in advance of Sang's trip to visit his grandmother we both decided to enroll in the Korean Language Center. Like many Korean-Americans, Sang was frustrated by the language barrier between himself and his parents. His family had immigrated to the States in the 80's, and English was not a first language for either parent. While Sang sought to improve his Korean at least to the point where he could converse comfortably with his family, Felice hoped to someday communicate with her future Korean parents-in-law in their native tongue and better appreciate their culture.

In the midst of our demanding schedules we found that the time spent at the KLC was incredibly rewarding and ultimately made our lives richer with our parents, other Koreans and each other. To our friends who want to learn Korean but say they are too busy, we tell them that if you take a genuine interest you'll find the time! We, for example, kept up with our classes in the midst of our engagement, wedding planning, two full time jobs and regular travel.
It wasn't easy but the effort and time spent have really been worth it! Not only does the school offer a solid and engaging teaching method but the class sizes are very small and improvements are noticeable within months if not weeks.

After a full year of studying with Drs. Lee and Kim we are much closer to our goal. Sang is much more confident in his speaking, and although Felice still has a lot to learn, she went from having no Korean language background whatsoever to being able to read and write and speak an early beginner's level of Korean. Felice has really enjoyed acquiring a new
language and the more she learns the more the veil over this once mysterious language is slowly lifted.

Aside from the skills we've acquired, we're grateful for the encouragement and mentoring our teachers have freely offered us in our efforts to better understand the the Korean culture.

I first studied Korean at a major university in the early 1990*s. When I wanted resume learning the language some three years ago, I chose Korean Language Center and have not been disappointed. Unlike other, ※non-specialized§ language schools, KLC teaches only Korean for adult students. The faculty is dedicated and excellent. All are native speakers who have spent years teaching this difficult language.

Classes are small, usually no more than six students, and highly personalized. Classroom participation is required, and every student speaks in Korean with the instructor in every class. The curriculum emphasizes both spoken and written Korean language skills. Through KLC*s structural methods and textbooks, students equally learn not only how to speak elementary Korean, but also how to write, read, and pronounce its unique writing system. Classes are serious, but fun.

Finally, KLC*s location in the center of Manhattan*s Korea town near its restaurants, bookstore, and supermarket- provides a(literally) perfect setting of this small, high-quality institution.

The Korean Language Center of New York is the best Korean language instruction I易ve encountered. I易ve taken years of lessons at Major universities and other culture centers with equally strong reputations and struggled with rote memorization and not really picking up the language. Here, I易ve finally started to really learn Korean to the point where even my mother noticed the difference. The instruction is clear, easily absorbed and the class is fun. As a Korean American with parents who speak English very well, I易ve always thought of the Korean Language as something that was extremely difficult to learn, and almost gave up on being able to do so. With the quality of instruction that is provided, I易ve come a long way, and hope to be conversational very soon.

The KLC is without a doubt the best place to learn Korean in New York. After a little more than a year studying I am able to talk to my in laws in their native language. I am not fluent yet but I am getting closer every day. The professors are excellent and always willing to answer your questions. We not only learn Korean language but also about the culture and traditions of Korea. The materials are unique and comprehensive. I also appreciate the very small class sizes and personalized Attention. Last but not least, the classes are fun!

"If you want to learn to speak Korean, come to KLC.  Forget all those language institutes or expensive universities.  I looked at them.  You'll end up with either a graduate student for a teacher who is there for the paycheck, or you'll be stuck in a large classroom with twenty other students.

I began studying at KLC about two years ago and although I had virtually no Korean ability, I can now read, write and speak in Korean.  Sometimes I'm surprised at how far I've gotten in such a short period of time.

I owe it all to the professors at KLC.  They are highly qualified, extremely dedicated, and are always there before or after class to answer questions...  They have a passion for teaching Korean and in my opinion employ a 'bend over backwards' approach to teaching their students."

"I am a Korean-American who came to the US at the age of 9.  Since high school, my interaction with Koreans has diminished.  As a consequence, I lost most of my Korean language skills.

My husband and I decided to take Korean class in the KLC mainly due to the small and intimate size of the class.  In a class of four to five students, we are able to get close guidance from our teachers.  For two busy New Yorkers, class hours and location, Little Korea in the middle of Manhattan, is also convenient.  It is easier to subemrge ourselves in the culture in Korea Town rather than in a university setting that has very little to do with Korea.

We are not only taught how to read, write, and speak, but also history and culture...  I am currently learning the importance of Korean literature and Chinese influence on the Korean Language.  The fast pace of the classes keeps us challenged and moving forward."

"After returning from a year teaching English in Korea, I wanted to maintain and improve the Korean that I acquired there.  I was also interested in learning more about Korean culture.  I have been attending the KLC for a little more than two years and the school has aided me greatly.  The program is well-structured so that continuous improvement is possible, mixing grammar drills with reading, writing, and even Hanja lessons."

- M. Patterson

" I have always enjoyed the learning experience at the Korean Language Center of New York. I feel that I have greatly benefited from the quality of the instruction, the support from the teachers, and the individual attention that I have received. The classes are always interesting, and the curriculum is designed so that in addition to learning the Korean language, you also learn about the Korean culture. Whether you are a beginner, intermediate or an advanced student, the personal attention that is given to everyone ensures that your individual needs will be met. Each class offers you the opportunity to practice speaking, listening, reading and writing, allowing you to truly improve your ability and understanding. I feel very fortunate to have been able to be a student at KLC, and will always be grateful to all the teachers there for their help and support."
